Tianqingli Residential, designed by Likun Shen, is a townhouse project located on the north side of the Shangtang River in Hangzhou, China. Inspired by the landscape of hills in the east and the rich history of the Southern Song Dynasty, this project aims to revive oriental classical culture through contemporary and sustainable development of traditional architecture.
The design of Tianqingli Residential is characterized by its multi-sided landscape and multiple courtyards, creating a direct dialogue between architecture and nature. The courtyards are classified using the traditional Chinese garden landscape borrowing approach, resulting in a more variable sequence between the private and public spaces. This approach aligns with contemporary aesthetic needs while maintaining a sense of privacy and openness.
One of the unique features of this project is its use of the Song-style architectural form, which is known for its simplicity and elegance. By using modern architectural language and a combination of aluminum alloy and wood structure for the curtain wall system, the project achieves a balance between tradition and sustainability. This innovative approach has even obtained a Chinese Utility Patent, making it a pioneering example of contemporary practice in Chinese traditional style buildings.
With a total site area of 17,900 sqm and a total building area of 8,500 sqm, Tianqingli Residential consists of 32 households. The project seamlessly combines traditional residential forms with contemporary construction technology, resulting in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution. The use of the traditional Chinese style curtain wall system mixed with aluminum alloy and wooden structure ensures the performance of the construction while maintaining a reasonable cost and construction cycle.
By embracing the characteristics of traditional residential settlements and responding to the local climate and living habits, Tianqingli Residential offers a new living experience that goes beyond the regular residential texture promoted by urbanization. It explores a new architectural model at the junction of city and nature, providing residents with a unique and enriching lifestyle.
The design of Tianqingli Residential draws inspiration from the poetic beauty of Song-style literati gardens. It creates a modern design language that is concise and immersive, allowing residents to fully appreciate the beauty of their surroundings. The project incorporates the essence of traditional lanes and leverages the natural environment of mountains and rivers to create a space that embodies the soul-stirring of a thousand-year culture.
Tianqingli Residential is a testament to Likun Shen's creativity and dedication to reviving oriental classical culture. It has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2023. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
